Swine flu chatter has been criss-crossing the Internet

Swine flu chatter has been criss-crossing the Internet as the global
spread of the virus became the hottest subject at micro-blogging
service Twitter.

By Tuesday afternoon, Google's trend-tracking website rated swine flu
a "spicy" Internet search topic due to a sudden spike in interest that
earned it a spot in a Top 10 online Hot Trends list.

Meanwhile, a Google Flu website designed to use search query data to
map the spread of influenza virus in the United States indicated the
respiratory illness did not appear to be spreading rampantly there.

"Current estimates of flu activity are still generally low across the
United States, as is expected given the confirmed swine flu case
count," Google.org said in a message atop its Flu Trends home page.

Google's Flu Trends map indicated that influenza activity was "low" in
all US states except Hawaii, where activity was rated as "high."

"Hawaii is a challenging model, but we aren't terribly surprised that
it's marked 'high' on Flu Trends," Google.org said in response to a
French news agency inquiry.

"The state government says they tend to see flu year-round because of
the tropical climate and tourist populations."

Germany will be selling rocket material to Iran

Koblenz, Germany - A 63-year-old German businessman on trial for
selling Iran 16 tons of graphite to make rocket nozzles, has admitted
the offence, a court spokesman said Wednesday.

At the opening of his trial on April 8, the man told a state superior
court in Koblenz, Germany that he rejected all 12 counts of the
indictment.

But in a statement read out by his lawyer this week, the defendant
admitted the charges, the spokesman said.

The man is accused of breaking laws preventing illicit arms exports by
declaring the graphite exported from 2005 to
2007 to be low grade.

This would have avoided the need to apply for a government clearance
which would almost certainly have been refused.

German intelligence suspects the graphite was bought for Iran's
missile programme. Tehran is suspected of secretly developing nuclear
weapons which could be delivered as the payload of the missiles.

MTV Turns To Twitter And Facebook To Power New Flagship Show

In a bid to retain its role as a pop culture staple, MTV has announced
plans to a launch a show that taps into the power of social media,
tightly integrating with Facebook and Twitter to maximize fan
interaction. The show will be hosted by British celebrity and model
Alexa Chun and begin airing this summer, with plans to move it to the
network's coveted after-school timeslot depending on its performance.

Back in the late 90's, an MTV show called Total Request Live was a
staple in dictating what was hot in popular music. That show gradually
lost steam over time (it was finally canceled in late 2008) and while
MTV has maintained some succcessful properties, it's lacking a
flagship show that its audience tunes into on a daily basis. According
to this AP report, viewership is down 18% for the first three months
of this year.<a target="_blank"

TellMe Rolls Out Better Speech Recognition And An Almost-Sexy New Voice Called Zira

TellMe, which Microsoft bought two years ago, is rolling out an
upgrade to its call center automation software which should improve
its speech recognition rates. It is also adding Global Crossing as
partner for reselling its VoiP carrier service, along with AT&T and
Verizon. TellMe handles 2.5 billion calls a year for customers such as
American Airlines and ETrade. Even a one percent improvement in
automated call completion rates translates into millions of dollars a
year for large call centers.

TellMe will be deploying a new text-to-speech engine with an
almost-sexy female voice called Zira. She only sounds slightly
robotic. Another set of technologies can break up sentences into their
constituent parts so that if the software doesn't understand something
it can ask for only the piece of missing information instead of
repeating the entire question. or instance, if you say you want to fly
from New york to San Francisco on Wednesday, and it got everything but
the day, it would only ask you what day you want to fly instead of
making you repeat your entire itinerary.

Technorati Gives Blog Network Blogcritics A Much Needed Facelift

Technorati has fully redesigned Blogcritics, a seven-year old blog
network that the media company acquired last August, in an effort to
drive more traffic to the site. We originally wrote about Blogcritics
in 2005. Blogcritics currently is a community of 3,300 writers who
have published more than 84,000 articles, providing bloggers an entry
point to publish their content to a more widely-visited site. The
content on the site hasn't changed much; it's will simply be packaged
in a sleeker, more user-friendly interface. Currently, the site's
design and interface is bland and features very little in terms of
images.

The new design, which will be rolled out at 1 AM PST tonight, features
a new logo, a more colorful interface, and is well-organized. The site
contains a new feature "ObamaNation," that will analyze the impact
President Obama is having on pop culture. It also allows users to
follow their favorite writers by listing all of the content a writer
has created both on and off the Blogcritics platform. All in all, it
is a big improvement in terms of the way the site looks and feels.
Blogcritics, which is similar to Salon's Open Salon, draws about 1
million unique monthly visitors, according to Google Analytics. The
site hasn't increased traffic since its acquisition last summer—the
site had about 1 million monthly uniques at that point as well, so
this is clearly an effort to spruce up the blog community to drive
more traffic. The site currently runs ads completely through
Technorati's ad network.

Steve Jobs On The Value Of Stock Options

On March 18, 2008, Steve Jobs was deposed by the SEC during its investigation of Apple’s stock option backdating scandal. The deposition was never made public until Forbes published it on Friday, after obtaining it through a Freedom of Information Act request. (Full deposition embedded below)

Jobs explains his reasoning for why he asked the board for mega grants of options for both himself and his top executives, but claims ignorance of the mechanics of how that was done after the board approved the grants themselves. (It was the falsifying of board minutes for a meeting that never occurred, not the backdating per se, that got Apple’s former general counsel Nancy Heinen into hot water with the SEC—this deposition was for a case against her). There aren’t too many revelations on the legal front in the document.

But the document provides the first detailed account of the incident from Steve Jobs himself in his own words. What comes through in the deposition is how Jobs sees himself and his’ fierce loyalty to those who work for him. For instance, after selling NeXt to Apple in 1997, his initial reason for acting as a consultant was to get “some of the NeXt people into some jobs where they could help Apple.” He himself was reluctant at first to take on the CEO role at Apple because he didn’t want the people at his other company, Pixar, to “think I was abandoning them.”

Best Interview i have ever heard abt...

One of the best interviews!!!

Interviewer: Tell me about yourself.

Candidate: I am SAMEER GUPTA. I did my Tele Communication engineering from
BabanRao Dhole-Patil Institute of Technology.

Interviewer: BabanRao Dhole-Patil Institute of Technology? I had never heard
of this college before!

Candidate: Great! Even I had not heard of it before getting an admission
into it . What happened is - due to cricket world cup I scored badly! in 12th.I
was getting a paid seat in a good college. But my father said (I prefer to
call him 'baap') - "I can not invest so much of money".(The baap actually said
- "I will never waste so much of money on you"). So I had to join this
college. Frankly speaking this name - BabanRao Dhole-Patil, can at the most be
related to a Shetakari Mahavidyalaya.

Interviewer: ok, ok. It seems you have taken 6 years to complete your
engineering.

Candidate: Actually I tried my best to finish it in 4 years. But you
know, these cricket matches and football world cup, and tennis
tournaments. It is difficult to concentrate. So I flunked in 2nd and
3rd year. So in all I took 4 + 2 = 7 years.

Interviewer: But 4+2 is 6.

Candidate: Oh, is it? You know I always had KT in maths. But I will try
to keep this in mind. 4+2 is 6, good, thanks. These cricket matches
really affect exams a lot. I think they should ban it.

Interviewer: Good to know that you want cricket matches to be banned.

Candidate: No, no... I am talking about Exams!!

Interviewer: Ok, What is your biggest achievement in life?

Candidate: Obviously, completing my Engineering. My mom never thought I
would complete it. In fact, when i flunked in 3rd year, she was looking for a job
for me in BEST (Bus corporation in Maharashtra) through some relative.

Interviewer: Do you have any plans of higher study?

Candidate: he he he.. Are you kidding? Completing 'lower' education
itself was so much of pain!!

Interviewer: Let's talk about technical stuff. On which platforms have
you worked?

Candidate: Well, I work at SEEPZ, so you can say Andheri is my current
platform. Earlier I was at Vashi center. So Vashi was my platform then. As you can
see I have experience of different platforms! (Vashi and Andheri are the
places in Mumbai)

Interviewer: And which languages have you used?

Candidate: Marathi, Hindi, English. By the way, I can keep quiet in
German, French, Russian and many other languages.

Interviewer: Why VC is better than VB?

Candidate: It is a common sense - C comes after B. So VC is a higher
version than VB. I heard very soon they are coming up with a new
language VD!

Interviewer: Do you know anything about Assembly Language?

Candidate: Well, I have not heard of it. But I guess, this is the
language our ministers and MPs use in assembly.

Interviewer: What is your general project experience?

Candidate: My general experience about projects is - most of the times
they are in pipeline!

Interviewer: Can you tell me about your current job?

Candidate: Sure, Currently I am working for Bata InfoTech ltd. Since
joining BIL, I am on Bench. Before joining BIL, I used to think that
Bench was another software like Windows.

Interviewer: Do you have any project management experience?

Candidate: No, but I guess it shouldn't be difficult. I know Word and
Excel. I can talk a lot. I know how to dial for International phone call
and use speaker facility. And very important - I know few words like -
'Showstoppers ' , 'hotfixes',
'SEI-CMM','quality','versioncontrol','deadlines' , 'Customer
Satisfaction' etc. Also I can blame others for my mistakes!

Interviewer: What are your expectations from our company?

Candidate: Not much.

1. I should at least get 40,000 in hand.

2. I would like to work on a live EJB project. But it should not have
deadlines. I personally feel that pressure affects natural talent.

3. I believe in flexi-timings.

4. Dress code is against basic freedom, so I
would like to wear t-shirt and jeans.

5. We must have sat-sun off. I will suggest Wednesday off also, so as to
avoid breakdown due to overwork.

6. I would like to go abroad 3 times a year on short term
preferably 2-4 months) assignments. Personally I prefer US, Australia and
Europe. But considering the fact that there is a world cup in West Indies in
2007, I don't mind going there in that period. As you can see I am modest and
don't have many expectations. So can I assume my selection?

Interviewer: he he he ha ha ha. Thanks for your interest in our
organization. In fact I was never entertained so much before. Welcome to
INFOSYS .. :-))

Dubai Sports City Ready To Defeat Australia

After more than three years and USD 100 million in investment, the
official opening tomorrow of the 25,000 seat cricket stadium at Dubai
Sports City has been called the realization of a dream, says its CEO.

Inaugurated tomorrow with a one day international cricket match
between Australia and Pakistan, the Dubai Sports City cricket stadium
– the only one of its kind in Dubai, and among the very best
purpose-built cricket stadiums in the world – will serve as a venue
for international and domestic cricket as well as hosting a
significant number of international caliber entertainment events.

"Just three years ago, the founding partners of Dubai Sports City set
out to build one of the world's best cricket stadiums, and today we
have realized that dream," said U. Balasubramaniam, Chief Executive
Officer of Dubai Sports City.

"This stadium, together with the ICC Global Cricket Academy which is
located onsite, will serve as a global centre of excellence for
cricket. Tomorrow's match between two of the world's best sides is
further testament to the potential of this facility as a truly
international venue for test, one-day international, and Twenty:20
cricket matches."

Dubai Sports City ready to go

From its inception, Dubai Sports City board members set out to build a
best-in-class facility, to ICC standards, from the design of its roof
structure based on the traditional Arabic tent, to the meticulous
detail shown in the construction and maintenance of the pitch which
simulates playing conditions on surfaces from three different
continents.

The Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium is bowl shaped, providing
excellent views from every seat in the ground and simultaneously
bringing the spectators closer than ever to the action.

The player's changing rooms will be among the most luxurious and
spacious of any cricket ground in the world. With indoor and outdoor
pitch-side seating, physiotherapy and massage rooms, a raised lounge
with a view of the pitch, locker rooms and dining areas, the Dubai
Sports City cricket stadium will provide the world-class player with
everything they need.

Within the media centre there are 82 indoor press seats with cable and
wireless internet connection and excellent views of the stadium. The
exceptionally well appointed VVIP and Gold boxes will hold more than
100 people, with 24 luxurious boxes on the lower level adjacent to
VVIP and Gold Boxes and 17 high quality corporate boxes looking out on
to the pitch from the top level of the venue.

Pakistani Forces Deploy in New Region Infiltrated by Taliban

Militants in Pakistan have ambushed paramilitary forces who were being
rushed to a region near the capital that was recently overrun by
Taliban forces from the nearby Swat valley. Witnesses say gunmen in
Buner district, killed at least one of the paramilitary troops.
Despite the latest clashes, political leaders say they continue to
favor diplomacy in dealing with the militants.

Troops take up key positions

Locals in Buner district, which is only about 100 kilometers from the
Pakistani capital, say security forces began arriving Wednesday,
taking up positions around government buildings and key roads. It is
unclear how many additional forces have been ordered to Buner. Local
officials say as many as eight platoons, or about 400 paramilitary
troops have arrived in the mountainous region.

Sher Akbar, a retired lawmaker who represented Buner in parliament,
tells VOA that Taliban fighters are now patrolling parts of the
district and local police have not been seen in public.

Taliban controls Buner

Speaking by phone from Buner he says the Taliban are totally in
control of the district and the local government has lost authority
over the region.

Pakistani news media have reported government officials and aid groups
have abandoned local offices. Sher Akbar says many in Buner are
worried that fighting could break out soon between security forces and
militants, and some people are preparing to leave.

Groups of militants infiltrated Buner last week, shortly after the
government signed a peace deal to establish Islamic law in nearby Swat
valley and other parts of the northwest. Local officials estimate more
than 500,000 people live in the Buner area.

Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter Edition

The Wall Street Journal Monday has described Microsoft’s netbook-tailored Windows 7 Starter Edition as a ‘gamble,’ saying that the company was trying to hook netbook customers to upgrade to the new version, sans Linux-based alternatives.

Apparently, Microsoft is trying hard for Windows to remain the netbook OS of preference, more so as it is involved in a tough competition with the recent netbook-favorite operating system - Linux.

The limiting factor of the new version is that it can only run three simultaneous applications, implying that users can only keep two applications open, along with an antivirus program; and its graphical interface is also less robust than the complete version of Windows 7.

United States ask Iran to end its “hateful rhetoric”

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 01:40 PM PDT

WASHINGTON: The United States called Monday on Iran to end its “hateful rhetoric” after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s attacks on Israel but said it still wanted talks with Tehran to mend relations.

President Barack Obama “disagrees vehemently” with Ahmadinejad, who branded Israel a racist state, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

He said it vindicated the decision by the country’s first African-American president to shun the UN conference on racism in Geneva.

“This is hateful rhetoric. It’s, I think, one of the reasons why you saw the administration and the president determined that its participation in this conference was not a wise thing to do,” he said.

But Gibbs added, “We continue to evaluate our policy and understand that from a larger foreign policy framework, doing things the same old way is not likely to bring about the change we need in our foreign policy.”

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said Ahmadinejad’s “rhetoric is unhelpful, it’s counterproductive and it just feeds racial hatred.”

“We want to have a direct dialogue with Iran, but Iran needs to do a number of things to get back in the overall good graces of the international community,” Wood told reporters.

PML-N criticised for not joining federal cabinet

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 07:07 AM PDT

Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian leader Arbab Khizar Hayat Khan expressed has criticised Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif for not rejoining PPP-led federal government and termed the decision as contrary to the larger interest of country and nation. In a statement issued here on Monday , the PPP leader said President and Co-chairperson of PPP Asif Ali Zardari keeping in view the national interest and the turmoil loaming over the country invited the PML (N) leader to rejoin the cabinet and join hands to solve the common problems.

Khizar Hayat Khan said PML rejection to the offer reveals it true face that its leaders were more interested to get benefit from the situation and prefer their petty and personal interest above national interest, adding that Pakistan was acquired after hectic efforts and sacrifices of millions of people and defending it was every body’s national and ethical duty. President Asif Ali Zardari, PPP leader said believed in politics of harmony and wished to work jointly with all parties for the people and country, especially, he added , in a situation while the country was surrounded by various kinds of dangers. PPP leader Khizar Hayat Khan said PML (N) leader rejected the invitation with the aim to get popularity and increase its vote banks but he added the masses were well aware and would reject the PML (N)and its leaders in the elections expected to be held in 2013.

Abhishek and Aishwarya’s Hideaway Celebrations!

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 06:32 AM PDT

Bollywood's most glamorous married couple won't be in India for their second marriage anniversary on April 20. Abhishek and Aishwarya are off for a week-long holiday to an undisclosed destination to bring in their vacation.

Says a source, "Last year Abhishek was slogging it out in Miami for Dostana and Aishwarya joined him there for their wedding anniversary. This year they were again supposed to be working, though happily together, for the next schedule of Mani Ratnam's Raavan on their anniversary."

But with Mani Ratnam asked by doctors to rest out for a while the schedule has been slightly pushed ahead, giving the pair a chance to go for a much-needed holiday.
Says the source, "In fact Mani had suggested he'd start the schedule later to give Abhishek and Aishwarya a chance to take time off for their anniversary. But the couple had refused. It's only now when the schedule is pushed ahead that they've decided to take that anniversary holiday."

Plane Crashes in Ocean off Santa Barbara

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 06:26 AM PDT

Santa Barbara: Authorities say a pilot is missing after his small plane crashed into the ocean off the Santa Barbara coast.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says in a statement that the single engine Extra EA300 disappeared off radar yesterday evening.

A Santa Barbara County Sheriff Department helicopter crew later found debris and an oil slick about two miles (3.2 km) offshore.

The plane is registered to a Santa Barbara company called Otter Enterprises, but no phone listing for that company could be found.

A sheriff’s dispatcher says Coast Guard crews are assisting in the search for the pilot, the only person believed to have been aboard the plane when it crashed.

The crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Magic Figure of 272 Will Crossed by NDA: Sushma Swaraj

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 06:18 AM PDT

Magic Figure of 272 will Crossed by NDA BHOPAL: Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj today expressed confidence that the NDA would definitely cross the magic figure of 272 in the Lok Sabha elections.

Not only would the NDA get a majority on its own, the BJP would also emerge as the single largest party, Swaraj said while addressing a press conference at the Madhya Pradesh BJP office.

Asked to specify the number of seats that the BJP was likely to win, she said that the party would win anything between 180 to 200 seats on its own.

The senior BJP leader, who is the party in-charge for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand said that her party can win all the 11 seats in Chhattisgarh, all the 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh and four out of six seats in Jharkhand for which polling was held in the first phase on April 16.

Sushma said that she was hurt at the type of language being used by leaders of some political parties during the campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

She claimed that when BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, L K Advani described Manmohan Singh as a weak Prime Minister, he did not attack him personally but only referred to his working style.

Similarly, Sushma said that when Narendra Modi called the Congress as old, he did not mean disrespect to any person but only spoke of the organization.

Pappu Yadav May Hurt, Save Me: CPI-M Leader’s Widow

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 06:18 AM PDT

Pappu Yadav May Hurt, Save Me: CPI-M Leader's Widow The wife of slain Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Ajit Sarkar, fighting elections from Purnia in Bihar, has urged the Election Commission to provide her adequate security against her husband's murderer and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Pappu Yadav.

Madhavi Sarkar, contesting as a Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) candidate, has told the poll panel that she feels threatened by Pappu Yadav.

"I have told the Election Commission that a free Pappu Yadav is a serious threat to my life. Anything can happen to me. Even the local police are helpless," Madhavi told media on telephone.

Madhavi's husband, who was locked in a feud with Pappu Yadav over farm labourers, was shot dead with his driver Harendra Sharma and party worker Ashfaqur Rehman in Purnea, about 350 km from here, on June 14, 1998.

Pappu Yadav, the sitting MP from Madhepura, was held guilty of Sarkar's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court last year. But the Patna High Court granted him bail two months ago.

He is now busy campaigning in the constituency for his mother Shanti Priya Devi, an independent candidate who enjoys Congress support.

"Pappu Yadav is posing a serious threat to peace in Purnea. Free, fair and peaceful polling is not possible unless he is put behind bars," said Madhavi.

Earlier this month, the Patna High Court rejected Pappu Yadav's plea to suspend his conviction in the murder case so that he could contest the Lok Sabha election.

After he was barred from contesting, he revolted against the Lalu Prasad-Ram Vilas Paswan alliance and said he would campaign for the Congress.

His wife Ranjita Ranjan, a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP, has also defected to the Congress to contest from Supaul constituency.
